Electric Vehicle Chargers

There are many advantages to owning an electric or hybrid vehicle, not least energy efficiency and carbon reduction. The government is focused on promoting the use of EVs with a £400m commitment to encourage potential purchasers. Part of this strategy sets aside funding for the grant-assisted installation of EV charge units at homes and workplaces throughout the UK. Below we have tried to answer common questions relating to domestic and commercial EV charge point installations.

EV Domestic Installations

  • I thought Grants were available for Free Supply and Installation of Home Chargers? +

    A. Up until August 2014 the UK Governments OLEV Home Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Scheme enabled homeowners a full grant for supply and installation of approved EV chargepoint models. Under new guidelines issued in August 2014 domestic EV charge point grants are now set at a 75% contribution to the cost of one chargepoint and its installation, with a grant cap of £500 per household/eligible vehicle.

  • What are the requirements to be accepted for a Household Grant? +

    The Free Chargepoint scheme ended in August 2014 and new applicants are required to either own or lease an electric vehicle or be the primary user of a company EV. Commercial Vehicle operators can also apply for a home installation if they have been the primary user for six months from July 2014. To qualify you must also be a homeowner, or landlord with off-street parking.

  • Do I need to fill in any paperwork? +

    Please get in touch with Retroflo to obtain the relevant paperwork. There are a few forms to fill in, in order to claim the grant, these must be filled in and sent back to us prior to our survey.

  • What will a Household Charger Cost? +

    Usually the cost of a household charger is in the region of £149-£199 in addition to the £500 grant, depending on which unit is selected. This is on the basis that the current electrical installations is compliant with electrical wiring regulations and matches our installation terms and conditions.

  • How long does installation take? +

    Once your order is placed; a Retroflo engineer will visit your home to undertake a pre-installation survey to check the current electric supply meets regulatory requirements. If all is OK, installation can go ahead. Fitting an EV charger generally takes 2-3 hours.

  • How will I manage usage and costs? +

    Our EV charge point solutions help owners reduce energy costs with intelligent charge scheduling to take advantage of lower tariff periods. With complete control and monitoring of their network, charge point owners can either opt for a swipe card system that allows access for authorised users only, or choose to make the unit available for all EV drivers to use.

  • Does the energy used contribute to CRC calculations? +

    Yes, and the system will easily generate reports for taxable benefit and CRC calculations. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was designed to encourage large public and private sector organisations to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through energy efficiency.
